NYC PARKS CUTS THE RIBBON ON NEWLY COMPLETED TURF FIELD AND OTHER IMPROVEMENTS AT BENNETT PARK
NYC PARKS CUTS THE RIBBON ON NEWLY COMPLETED TURF FIELD AND OTHER IMPROVEMENTS AT BENNETT PARK
Reconstructed with state-of-the-art synthetic turf, the central lawn features newly planted trees and shrubs, refinished benches and improved paths at the highest natural point in Manhattan.
NYC Parks Manhattan Borough Commissioner Tricia Shimamura today joined DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, Council Members Carmen De La Rosa and Gale Brewer, and community members to cut the ribbon on the reconstructed central lawn at Bennett Park.
“Bennett Park’s central lawn has long been a beloved space, but years of wear and tear made it difficult to enjoy. Today we’re pleased to celebrate a transformed space that not only looks beautiful but also is a much-improved asset for the community,” said NYC Parks Manhattan Borough Commissioner Tricia Shimamura. “With state-of-the-art synthetic turf, native plantings and reused materials, this project reflects our commitment to creating vital green spaces that truly serve the public.”
“Bennett Park is an important community space, and this renovation reflects what’s possible when we invest in our public parks,” said Council Member Carmen De La Rosa. “I’m grateful to the NYC Parks staff for their hard work and to all who secured the funding for this project. As we celebrate this achievement, we must continue advocating for the 1% of the city budget to go toward parks to ensure every neighborhood has access to safe, beautiful and well-maintained green spaces.”
“I am delighted to have allocated $850,000 to renovate the park, and the outcome is impressive,” said Council Member Gale A. Brewer. “I appreciate the Parks Department inviting me to the ribbon cutting, and I look forward to participating in ongoing events. This park is the highest natural point in Manhattan, and people gather here for reflection and rejuvenation.”
The old Bennett Park central lawn had become a dust bowl due to repeated issues with growing grass. The newly reconstructed lawn now features state-of-the-art synthetic turf.
Trees and shrubs were planted along the border, a persistent drainage issue was fixed and pathways were upgraded, including the one leading to the rock outcropping with the historic marker indicating that it is 265 feet above sea level – the highest natural point on Manhattan.
In regard to sustainability, granite blocks from the site were repurposed for tree pits, improving a main pedestrian route through the park, and existing benches were reconstructed and reused, helping to lower the project’s carbon footprint. Additionally, new plantings absorb stormwater, cool the site by mitigating the urban heat island effect and provide habitat for urban wildlife. To further enhance cooling, a light-colored material palette was used to minimize heat absorption.
This project was funded by former Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and former Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez.
